Tonight was the last meeting of my "visual narratives" class, and this pretty well sums up a lot of the feelings I had with it towards the end. I have a tough time just sitting and drawing something with no reference, so for lack of any better ideas, I drew a comic about how I couldn't come up with a comic, using my reflection in the window in front of me, which is why I appear to be left handed in here when I'm actually right handed. Ultimately, I'm not sorry I took the class, even if I didn't get as much out of it as I'd hoped.
Even "I have nothing to say" is saying something! There are a lot of writers out there who write about not being able to write. Whole novels or screenplays, sometimes. "Creative barrenness" is a relative thing -- it's just your interpretation of what you create. "I have writer's block," or "I have nothing to say" (a favorite of mine), or "I'm creatively barren" are all lies we tell ourselves to avoid the hard work (and potential failure) of actually putting something down on paper. The quality of what we create can be judged later -- the essential first step is doing something.
Note: I write all this as much for myself as for you. I haven't even sought out such a class as the one you took. Mea culpa. You are leagues ahead of me.
