The obscure character I've selected to draw this time is Lt. Lonnoc Kedair, who was introduced in the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy of novels. Lt. Kedair serves aboard Captain Ezri Dax's ship, the USS Aventine, as chief of security, a position she is well suited for, given that her race, the Takarans, are very tough to kill.
It's a bit of a challenge drawing something from a written medium, because it requires more use of the imagination. As far as I know, this could be the first ever visual depiction of this character.
She's not only an obscure character, but an obscure Star Trek alien as well- only one Takaran ever appeared before, in a TNG episode titled "Suspicions." At least that gave me a reasonable idea of what she'd look like, assuming the females of the species don't look different from the males or the facial bumps don't vary a lot from person to person- two things that have been sometimes known to happen with aliens in that franchise. I decided it was wisest to play it safe and keep her fairly consistent with what was already shown on screen.
I thought Takarans were an interesting species when they were first introduced, so I was pleased to learn that one was given a significant role in the books and was not disappointed by her characterization. In my opinion, Kedair is a pretty kickass addition to the literary Star Trek world.
At first glance i thought she was a Cardassian, though it took me a little while, i remember the TNG episode her race was from. I'm really glad you decided to do some more Trek work! Her face is amazingly detailed and i simply love the eyes. Can't wait to see more of your work.
No problem! I've been looking at getting into the Trek Expanded universe books. Would the Destiny trilogy be an okay place to start? Also; do you intend to continue creating more fine Trek themed art?
Honestly, I don't know if the "Destiny" trilogy is the best place to start, but then again, I did and that was just fine with me. Although it's a crossover between and a continuation of various series, particularly the TNG relaunch and the Titan books, it can also mostly be enjoyed as a stand alone story. Considering the amount of history its building on, the author does an amazingly good job of getting the reader up to speed, so even though there were many characters that were new to me and allusions to events I was unfamiliar with, I seldom felt lost. Maybe I missed out on a bit by jumping into Destiny first, but I was intrigued by the major spoiler warnings I kept seeing about it and did not want to have to go through well over a dozen books before finding out what the big deal was. I think it's normally preferable to experience stuff in the correct order, but in this case, I don't really regret having read "Destiny" first.
To answer your other question, I'm sure I will be doing more Star Trek art in the future. Actually, now that I've drawn Kedair, part of me wants to try drawing the rest of the Aventine crew. Thanks for the interest; I appreciate it.
I guess I've read more than a few Trek novels, but I'm not religious about it. It used to be that most of the books were self-contained stories, so I could read whatever random one caught my fancy. Now that the editorial decision has been made to allow the books to have an ongoing and evolving continuity, it's a little harder for a casual reader like myself to jump in wherever they like. The reason I felt compelled to pick up the aforementioned Destiny trilogy was because I'd inferred that the events in them had major ramifications for the entire Star Trek universe (at least as far as the books are concerned). Considering how many new characters there were and how much has changed for most of the familiar characters since I last saw them on screen, it was surprisingly easy to follow.
